Winter Safety

Important Tips to Consider for the Winter

The Winter season is upon us. Safety is a 365 concern, but the winter season adds some additional complexities. Some things to keep in mind during the winter are ice storms, power outages, alternate heat sources, driving, physical exertion, walking, and of course snow storms.

Are you prepared for these?

I am sure we have all heard the suggestions such as having extra blankets and supplies in our vehicles, not over-doing-it when shoveling snow, and adjusting driving when roads are hazardous. Excellent suggestions.

  • Do you read, and follow, manufacturers guidelines for alternate heat sources?
  • If you use candles for light when power goes out, or even just for ambience, do you use them safely?
  • Do you keep extra food, water and medications available?

We preach fire safety and escape plans continuously. Do you have a plan for winter storms and conditions? Winter storms can be long duration events, which we should all have plans for. Remember that when conditions become hazardous, the response times for first responders is increased. The best course of action is to plan ahead, be prepared, have a kit, and don’t allow an emergency to occur.

What’s in your kit?

Happy winter, and as we say in the fire service, “BE SAFE!”.
